With the dramatic rise in sugar consumption, making it a growing health concern, too much sugar is North America’s culprit for weight gain and diabetes. Interestingly, we are searching for new ways to decrease our sugar intake. Fortunately, substituting with Stevia is an excellent way to accomplish this. A naturally sweet herb, commonly used in place of sugar. Stevia is a natural sweetener found in powdered or liquid formats. It can be a great substitute for sugar to sweetened foods.

When substituting sugar with various Stevia products, be prepared for differences in concentrations and sweetness levels. Mastery of this substitution requires some finesse. Sticking to a single brand and format can streamline the process of determining the appropriate amount to use as a sugar replacement. Stevia is available in both liquid and powder forms. As a general guideline, for every 1 cup of sugar, consider using 1 teaspoon of liquid concentrate or 1 teaspoon of powdered extract. If you’re replacing 1 tablespoon of sugar, opt for 6 to 9 drops of liquid concentrate or 1/4 teaspoon of powder. For 1 teaspoon of sugar, aim for 2 to 4 drops of liquid concentrate or a pinch to 1/16 teaspoon of powdered extract.
