Indispensable Fitness Goals

A deep, primal, personal connection to your fitness goal is truly indispensable.

Make a Fitness Resolution Stick !

We can imagine its about a zillion people each year making resolutions surrounding health and fitness in the New Year. And probably 3/4 of a zillion of them fail to stick to those fitness resolutions after 6 weeks. Here are a few theories as to why and how to make a fitness resolution with a stick rate.

Make Your Fitness Goals SMART Goals

You’ve probably seen fitness guru Andre Noel Potvin’s video discussing the acronym SMART Goals before. There he describes the characteristics of the kind of goal you are most likely to focus upon and achieve. SMART Goals are defined as Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound.

So saying you want to “challenge a Tough Mudder in June” is preferable to saying you want to “get in top fitness shape.” The former is specific: You are aware when you’ve attained it, it’s (presumably) very realistic for you, and you can break it into small daily actions. The latter is rather vague. You don’t really know what fitness goal you’re chasing. Is it getting ripped with a six-pack? bench pressing 320? starting a new healthy career or weighing 120? You can’t really act on it.

Add Passion to Your Fitness Goal

Most published articles on goal-setting slams the breaks right there. This is an element to the equation that should not be ignored. No health or fitness resolution is worth the time if you leave out “Passion.”

Personal trainers encounter those people all the time who say they want to get fit, improve their fitness, health, and energy. Trainers have been hearing it for years and they still don’t do it.

But when the epiphany happens: They meet the right romantic partner. They decide they want to try having a child. They get fired or hired or divorced. They envision themselves of how they used to look and decide they’re going to look that way again, at any cost. And one year later you see them and they’re unrecognizable.

Its irrelevant to what sparks that internal change but it’s essential that it takes place. None of our ravings about potential improvements in your cardiovascular functioning or metabolic rate or mitochondrial density are worth ignoring.

Ignite That Fitness Fire

You can’t drive this kind of epiphany, of course not. But you can sit down and take a good, long thought about what will ignite that fire enough to get it done. Not now, when you have more time and energy, but in a few months, when your taxes are due and it’s still cold outside and relaxing in bed for an extra hour sounds way more divine than getting up for a 6 am workout.

You are the only one who knows what that spark is. Maybe it’s about attracting a partner or reigniting that spark in a relationship. Or choosing to have the freedom of being a better parent and/or getting a career doing what you love so you can have the freedom, the healthy feeling like you did in college and look like a Roman statue. Maybe it involves the gym and a personal trainer. Whatever it is, be reminded that a deep, primal, personal connection to your fitness goal is truly indispensable.
