Presented by Andre Noel Potvin, M.Sc. Cardiac Rehabilitation, ACE, BCRPA-TFL, ACSM.

Recognized by the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) and The American Council on Exercise (ACE) for providing Continuing Education Credits (CEC), the Clinical Exercise & Post-Rehabilitation Workshop Series (CES) are a select group of courses specifically designed for the Fitness Trainer that has an interest in expanding their knowledge in clinical exercise.

Students will learn foundation knowledge in exercise post-rehabilitation, training special population groups, and advanced knowledge in fitness testing and assessments.

Purpose

To provide fitness professionals with insight, information, and practical skills regarding the conditioning of medically cleared clients recovering from a musculoskeletal injury.

Description

This insightful workshop will focus on the physiological healing stages and processes of a musculoskeletal injury.  Participants will learn to recognize an individual’s healing stage of injury and then determine the best course of action to facilitate recovery.  This may entail referral to the appropriate healthcare professional or work with clients that have been medically cleared for physical reconditioning. Attendees will leave feeling confident in their abilities to apply this information immediately post-workshop.

The course will educate the fitness trainer on the following objectives:

  • Knowledge of normal physiological responses and adaptations at each Stage of post-injury healing
  • The ability to recognize the signs and symptoms associated with each stage of healing
  • The ability to select the correct Starting Exercise program for each stage of healing
  • The proper application of reconditioning exercises for medically cleared clients

Materials

The student will be provided with a Stages of Healing handout with the course content.

Attendance Expectations

100% attendance is expected.

Progress & Assessment

Students will be assessed through instructor feedback and mentorship throughout the training session.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this section, the fitness professional will be able to demonstrate the ability:

  • To distinguish the difference between the following stages of healing (a) acute – hemostasis & inflammation; (b) sub-acute – proliferation; (c) maturation – remodeling.
  • To recognize the signs and symptoms associated with each stage of healing.
  • To determine if a client requires referral to the appropriate healthcare professional.
